I'm a huge fan of automation. My dream kitchen is one where everything is automated. Meals cook by themselves and are served by robots which then clear the table and wash the dishes. Unfortunately such kitchens do not exist outside science fiction books... for now, that is.

I have to face the reality of a small kitchen, and having to prepare meals for an entire family even though I am time-challenged. Juggling work, household chores and cooking and taking care of kids is no mean feat. Sure, we could eat out, but nothing beats a good home cooked meal. Healthwise, it is better to eat home cooked food made with fresh, nourishing ingredients. The problem is that making these meals is so time consuming.

Even before the kids came along, my husband and I got sick of eating out, but with our jobs, I got back too late and tired to cook a decent dinner over the stove each night. That's why we bought a crockpot. That was a decade ago and I thought that was the best of all kitchen appliances for small spaces. A rice cooker took care of the rice. A dishwasher did the dishes for us. A friend gave us a sandwich maker for our housewarming party which we promptly put to good use.

With just those three kitchen appliances for small spaces (okay two. The dishwasher wasn't exactly small) dinner was a breeze. Each night, I'd peel and chop the vegetables, seal them up and put them in the fridge. The meat goes into the fresh meat compartment so it wouldn't be so solidly frozen. Before I leave for work, I'd toss the meat and veggies into the crockpot, add water, switch it on and we'd have a one dish meal for dinner. The moment we step into our home, we'd dump the rice and water into the rice cooker and switch it on while we shower and unwind after a hard day's work. Once the rice is ready, we'll have our home cooked dinner. All freshly cooked of fresh meat and vegetables.

The only problem is, stew and rice or soup and rice for dinner every night, though healthy, can get monotonous. Sandwiches were more suitable for breakfast. Still, it was better than nothing.

Technology is simply wonderful. Someone invented a brilliant meal maker. It looks like a sandwich maker and is as easy to use as one.
